The Slice Tower Hamlets publishes special Earth issue for its spring/summer 2023 edition

The Slice Tower Hamlet’s fourth issue is a special earth edition and reports on initiatives in the borough that are tackling climate change during a cost-of-living crisis.

The print magazine is the same brand of community-centred news and culture that is published online at Roman Road LDN, showcasing content from all four of Social Streets’ platforms in Tower Hamlets: Roman Road LDNBethnal Green LDNWhitechapel LDN and Poplar LDN.

As a social enterprise, Social Streets uses journalism to strengthen the community by reporting on important local issues, providing up-to-date information on local initiatives, and by exploring ideas around home, identity and belonging.

Social Streets’ founder Tabitha Stapely said: ‘The Slice is more thoughtful and more community-led than most local publications, restoring trust in local media.

‘Compared to more conventional local newspapers that have a more sensationalist and often inflammatory approach to news, we focus on constructive journalism that shows both sides of the argument and ensuring all have a voice.’

Against the backdrop of soaring prices and the climate emergency, this special Earth issue of The Slice explores how our borough is becoming a model for grassroots environmental change for the many, not the few.

Articles shine a light on the grassroots organisations and initiatives leading the way in attainable sustainable living. The magazine celebrates 30 years of Stitches in Time the Limehouse charity supporting women in isolation through sustainable fashion; reviews Hackney Wick’s first zero-waste restaurant; speaks to the Blueprint Architects redesigning how food is produced across the borough, and looks beyond the class war at cycling rights of an invisible sector – cycle couriers.

With 10,000 copies of The Slice available, you can pick up a magazine at any of the Idea Stores in Tower Hamlets as well as community centres and hubs.

The special Earth edition of The Slice magazine is now available at stockists across Tower Hamlets, in time for International Earth Day on Saturday 22 April.
